High Res

Just found this today when discussing game design with some people! Often I've been asked if/when I'll move to high res and usually the answer is "Why bother?", but I have experimented with the idea in the past, as can be seen here.

This is a screenshot from a working prototype of a platformer design that has been kicking around in my head for years now. It never got very far - this screenshot has been sitting around for over a year now, and I doubt I'll ever work on this build of it (although I still have the design firmly in my head and love it very much).

The biggest issue with games of this resolution is, of course, animation, so until/unless I get better at drawing characters consistently at a high resolution, I will most definitely stick to lower resolutions for now.

Who knows what the future holds, though?

Ben,

I like it! A lot! You should try one high-res game and see what the feedback is! (at the very least) :)

Heh, thanks Josh.

I do plan to try it, just gotta perfect drawing character sprites in Photoshop first :)

Wow! I'd really like to see this someday, hi-res or not. I agree, it might be an interesting challenge for you to attempt a hi-res game, although I can see how that would be a lot of work. I don't think sticking with low-res is a bad thing IMHO. Come on, your stuff's already gorgeous!=D

Heh, thanks! While I am generally satisfied with what I can do with low res, I *would* like to eventually expand and push my skills further. It all depends on how well I can learn to do it all!

Ooo... looks nice! Maybe something to explore further when AGS has even higher resolutions available and it becomes prettier enough to justify the effort?

Perhaps! This was coded in XNA (not by myself) which is probably a more sensible choice for a more action oriented game, though.

Wow, great design! Yay for twisty-turny-imaginative-thingies!

I think low-res is and always will be a perfect solution for adventure games, because there you have to merge relatively big amounts of text, interface elements, static characters and backgrounds with animated character sprites, and it all somehow should be consistent in the amount of detail per cm. And that's really tough in higher resolutions.

Platformers, on the other hand, are much more flexible in that aspect, and something that looks like this(and by that i mean - absolutely gorgeous) will definitely turn some heads. So, maybe, it would be a good idea to try it some day, eh?

Interesting thoughts on detail consistency, Ilyich, I really hadn't thought about it like that. Thanks for bringing it up!

Oooh, this looks prettyful! It's definitely worth a try - BUT only after you've made that other game with humanoid pets in old-fashioned clothing! ;) You've pulled off AMAZING things with lo-res so far, so I can understand that need to expand and see what you can do with more options. Just don't go 3D. Most 3D adventure games these days look terribly bland to me. Seriously, even the Sam'n'Max franchise lost all its appeal once it went 3D. Then again, you - with your sense of color - might actually pull it off :)

Heh, thanks Fitz.

I have basically no experience with 3d other than a bit of dabbling here and there, so there's no real threat of me moving to 3d at any time soon :)

Well, what about a finished playable beta version of this :-)

Looks so gorgious!

Hah, the puzzle ideas would take a long time to implement, I think! I don't even know if the source code is around anymore :)

I gotta say, that high res shot looks amazing!

Whilst I love the retro style, I'm not sure why everyone wants to do it all in super lo-res!

It would be brilliant if you made at least one of your games in high res or at least 640 x 480!

I most certainly plan to! Just not sure when :)

Your airwave characters are almost big enough to be high res! And I do think I've got some art from an old game called Corteza lying around...

Hah yes, I *have* experiemented with hi-res adventure game stuff (as you know :P) but it is still something that is beyond me for now.

~airwave~ characters look big, but once you double the resolution, they go back to looking really tiny hah

Very good! High-res games are not easy to make, but you should try...

Thanks Marco :)

I've been experimenting with painting at higher resolutions a bit lately, although animation still holds me back a fair bit.

Still, I am making an effort to shift up resolutions eventually, so who knows?
